Hungary is famous for its lively folk dance and music, presented with colorful costumes and unique instruments. Hungarian Folk Music and Dance is a family-fun performance that captures the authentic spirit of the Carpathian Basin — you’ll feel like a visitor to a welcoming Hungarian village as you enjoy enchanting melodies, folk games, and even a short “táncház” or “dance house” — that’s a Hungarian dance lesson! Béla Bartók — Hungary’s most famous composer — used folk music in his symphonies. Bartók said that Hungarian folk traditions are “beautiful to the eye; beautiful to the ear” — and once you see and hear them, you’ll think so, too! Members of The Rózsafa Ensemble appeared at the popular Smithsonian Folklife Festival, proudly taking part in the 2013 theme of “Hungarian Heritage: Roots to Revival.”

Who’s got rhythm? You’ve got rhythm! Drum Bommel is a fantastically fun trip through the world of percussion, with multipercussionist Sven Kiefer.  What is exactly is a “multipercuissionist”?  It means that Sven knows how to play just about any kind of drum, marimba, vibraphone, gong, cymbal, or other percussion instrument you can think of — and in this performance, he’ll share the magic of drumming, rhythm, and melody. Drums are the oldest known musical instrument, dating back to 6,000 B.C., and they are found in every culture throughout the world. In Africa, drums were once even used to “talk” to people miles away! Today, we hear them in all kinds of music. You’ll learn lots about drums — and be part of the show, as you dance, sing, and laugh!
