The class was remarkable in its diversity as well as academic success. More than 25 percent of the graduates achieved a 3.5 grade point average or higher during their time at Montgomery College.
While 53 percent of graduates came to the College from Montgomery County Public Schools, the graduates represented 109 foreign countries. Notably, students from Cameroon, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Peru and Ghana represent 34 percent of the graduating class.
Sixteen of the graduates were over the age of 60, demonstrating that it is never too late to pursue higher education. However, the average age of a graduate this year was 26.5.
The vast majority of the graduates are the first in their families to attend and graduate from college. In terms of racial diversity, the Montgomery College Class of 2016 is 30 percent Caucasian; 29 percent Black; 22.5 percent Hispanic; and 16 percent Asian.
