Dr. DeRionne Pollard, Montgomery College President, began her annual State of the College address talking about what she called a “very popular” pastime: spending money. “I think I can safely say that we all enjoy spending money. Deciding how to spend it can be complicated,” she said.
Dr. Pollard announced the formation of the Blue Ribbon Taskforce for Spending for Student Success. The group will look at spending resources in ways that best serve students.
“We are deeply, altruistically committed to student success, but we face very real world limits on our spending,” Pollard said. She noted competition for state and local funding is increasing.
“The county has been very generous and forward-thinking about the College’s role in building a highly skilled workforce, said Pollard. “But the county also has and will continue to face financial stressors over which it has little control and it – too – is subject to fluctuations in the market.”
The taskforce will begin work this summer.
“Smarter spending all around will help more of our students reach their goals, which is the heart of our mission,” Pollard said.
