This fall, at least five MC students enrolled in the School of General Studies at the highly prestigious Columbia University in New York. These students have firsthand knowledge of how important their foundation at MC has been in their pursuit of higher education.

Oluwabukola Abodunrin was an honors program student and will study computer science. Steven Francis was a business major and will study economics. Ronald Chang is a military veteran and former Germantown Renaissance Scholar interested in political science and international relations. Shannon Freed was an anthropology major and Renaissance Scholar at Takoma Park/Silver Spring. Shane Scott studied music.

Columbia University School of General Studies is an admissions portal to Columbia University for nontraditional and international students who have had to interrupt their pursuit of higher education for various reasons.

PHD-Student-FNouketchaFranklin Nouketcha ’11 recently passed the required written qualifying exam for his PhD. An electrical engineering major while at Montgomery College, he received the L.D. Bliss Electrical Society Scholarship in 2011. After completing his studies at Montgomery College, Franklin transferred to the University of Maryland in College Park where he was a recipient of the Tech Council of Maryland Kendall Scholarship.

Passing the written qualifying exam means that Franklin demonstrated competency in math, linear systems, devices, and digital logic. Next up for Franklin is the oral portion of the qualifying requirement for his PhD.

Franklin wrote to MC staff, “During my stay at Montgomery College, you have supported me in many ways. You have helped me in getting financial support and more importantly by providing letters of recommendation for multiple programs. Today is certainly one of the happiest days of my life and I wanted to take a few minutes to say thank you for all you have done for me at Montgomery College. I am and will always be grateful.”
